Les Ateliers d'écriture is a French Canadian adaptation of Writer's Workshop, an approach to teaching writing that has been popularized in North America by Lucy Calkins. The basic principle is simple: A 10 minutes mini-lesson, 30 minutes of writing, and 5 minutes of sharing time. While students are busy writing, educators confer with one student at a time to provide support and guidance. Each student is paired with a partner of similar writing level for the sharing part.
We are starting our Ateliers with a unit on narrative writing. This unit focuses on using little moments in life as inspiration for stories. Published books by accomplished authors will serve as models for us throughout the unit.
Each students is equipped with a writer's folder. As the text goes through the different stages of the writing process, it moves from pocket to pocket: Brouillon - First Draft, En révision - Under Revision and Finale - Final Copy.
This weekend, the students have to mission to notice 3 little moments that could be used as inspiration for stories next week. They have a small Calepin - Notebook and a pen in their coat pocket to help record these moments.
